Southern West Virginia Community and Technical
College makes every effort to comply with Section 504 of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of
1990. Southern is committed to providing all students with the
services necessary to assist them in successfully realizing their
educational plans.
Mission and Goals of Disability Services
Disability Services will provide a supportive environment to ensure that
students with disabilities have equal access to the programs and activities
offered by the College. Its goals are:
- To coordinate and provide reasonable accommodations and disability
related services;
- To encourage self-advocacy and personal responsibility on the part of students with
disabilities;
- To advocate for an accessible learning environment
through removal of physical, informational, and attitudinal barriers;
and
- To serve as a resource for members of the college community as well
as prospective students and parents.
Eligibility
To be eligible for disability-related services, students must have a
visibly obvious or documented disability as defined by the Americans with
Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and/or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation
Act of 1973.
Services are available for all students with documented disabilities,
whether full or part-time. It is the student's responsibility to
initiate contact with Disability Services and submit appropriate
documentation of the disability.
Disability Services is the designated office at Southern West Virginia
Community and Technical College that obtains and files disability related
documents, certifies eligibility for services, determines reasonable
accommodations, and makes the provision for accommodations.
Role of Disability Services
- Provides arrangements for reasonable
accommodations for qualified students with disabilities
- Maintains and protects the confidentiality of
student records as required by law
- Assists the College to understand the effects
of disabilities and to eliminate the physical, informational, and
attitudinal barriers that limit the range of opportunities for
students with disabilities.
- Stresses the development of self-advocacy and
self-determination skills
- Assists the College to comply with the
provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
