Types of Financial Assistance Available



There are two types of aid available:  need-based - funds awarded as a result of the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance and merit-based - funds awarded as a result of your academic achievements (grades, ACT scores, athletics, extracurricular activities, etc.)

Need-Based Aid

Federal Aid

The Federal Pell Grant is a need-based award funded through the federal government.  Three factors effect your eligibility:  overall family income (both taxed and untaxed), total number of  family members in the household, and the number of people attending college.

Campus-Based Aid Programs

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is aid in addition to the Federal Pell Grant.  The deadline date for applying for these funds is March 1 of the award year.

The Federal College Work Study Program provides jobs to undergraduate and graduate students, allowing you to earn money to pay your education expenses.

The following federal student loans are also available:  Federal Stafford Subsidized loan and Federal Stafford Unsubsidized  loan.

Merit-Based Aid

Southern Scholarships

  • Must maintain an overall 3.25 GPA

  • Must apply every year

  • Open to high school students and returning Southern students

Promise Scholarship

  • Merit-based scholarships that provides full tuition and fees to qualified high school students
  • Application form

Coca Cola Scholarship

  • Must be a high school senior
  • Must be a citizen of the US and attend an accredited school
  • Special emphasis on individual, character, personal merit, and background
  • Application form

Cancer's Survivor Scholarship

Americorps Service Award

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must be high school graduate or GED recipient
  • Must complete 1700 hours of service
  • Application instructions

Applications for the following scholarships are available in the financial aid office:

Scholarship for Women in Business

  • Must be 25 years of age or older and must be a US citizen

  • Officially accepted to an accredited institution in the US

  • Graduate within 12-24 months of receiving grant

  • Demonstrate critical need

Foodland Scholarship

  • Information may be obtained at any Foodland store

Kiwanis Club Scholarship

  • Maintain a minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA
  • Must attend full time

Logan Lions Club

  • Must plan to live and work in Logan area and must have 3.00 GPA
  • Demonstrate need

Logan General Hospital Auxiliary

  • Must be a graduate of a Logan County high school
  • Must be accepted into an Allied Health program
  • Demonstrate need

Lowe’s Scholarship

  • Be enrolled in a partner school in a course of study such as: carpentry, electrical, business, etc.
  • Be willing to work 10-20 hours per week during academic year and during summer break
  • Must be 18 years old
  • Demonstrate aptitude and interest in career represented at Lowe’s
  • Must have completed one semester of classes at the partner school

Shaun M. Ryan

  • Must live in Mingo, Pike, or Martin County
  • Must be female
  • Must demonstrate need

WV Literacy Foundation

  • Must have completed GED examination with a minimum score of 250
  • Must attend on a full-time basis
  • Must maintain satisfactory progress toward a degree or certificate

West Virginia State Grants

Higher Education Adult Part-time Student Grant (HEAPS)

The Higher Education Adult Part-time Student Grant (HEAPS) is tuition assistance for part-time students.

  • Must be an independent student
  • Grant covers tuition for 3-11 hours
  • Must have completed high school graduation or GED two years prior to application
  • Must be a resident of West Virginia
  • Must be enroll less than full time.

West Virginia Higher Education Grant

West Virginia Higher Education Grant (WVHEG) is funded by the state of West Virginia.  Both the FAFSA and the Common Application for State-Level Financial Aid Programs must be completed to be eligible for consideration.
