Distance Learning Opportunities
|
|
Distance Learning courses offer flexibility
in scheduling while meeting the same academic requirements and
objectives as traditional, classroom-based courses.
For the Fall 2007 semester Southern offers distance learning opportunities
using the following instructional formats. Click on the links below for detailed information about each mode of
delivery and to discover if on-line learning is for you.
- Correspondence
-
|
Correspondence courses are
designed for students with strong organizational skills.
Instructors will mail students a course packet after
registration, and students will mail back completed assignments
as scheduled. Three test sessions will be held at 9:00
a.m. on the following Saturdays: January 14, March 4, and
May 6 in room 122 on the Logan Campus of Southern.
Students who live more than an hour's drive away from campus may

- Interactive Classroom (ICR)
-
|
With Southern's interactive classroom system (ICR),
students enjoy access to many courses that would
not otherwise be available in remote areas.
These classrooms are fitted with technology that
allows sessions at one campus to be transmitted
to other campuses or off-site locations.
Instructors are trained to operate the cameras
for best effect. Students can view the
session, see demonstrations, ask and respond to
questions, and communicate with all other
locations. All four Southern campuses
offer interactive classrooms capable of sending and receiving signals;
off-site locations have receive-only capabilities. |
- On-line Initiative through the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS)
-
|
West Virginia Community and Technical College System (CTCS) and the
Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) have
entered into an agreement whereby the CTCS is making available,
to a limited number of West Virginia college students, access to
on-line courses provided by the KCTCS for the Spring 2006
semester. These courses are created, taught, and
controlled by the KCTCS and cross-listed as credit courses by
West Virginia community and technical colleges. Southern
West Virginia Community and Technical College is participating
in this program.
Because enrollment is limited, registration
for these on-line courses will be on a first-come, first-served
basis. There is no guarantee that space in a specific
course or courses will be available at the time an individual
wishes to register. Registration for these on-line courses is handled by the
Registrar.
These courses will operate under a separate academic calendar.

- Southern Regional Education Board's Electronic Campus
-
|
The
Southern Regional Education Board's
Electronic Campus was founded more
than 50 years ago as a way for states to improve and share
resources in higher education. The SREB continues to organize
and administer regional arrangements to avoid costly duplication
and expensive development of new programs. Another long-standing
effort, the Academic Common Market, provides access to
undergraduate and graduate programs in specialized areas. The
Electronic Campus of the SREB provides a link to distance
learning courses and programs offered by more than 300 colleges
and universities. Southern is a member of the Southern
Regional Education Board's Electronic Campus. Currently Southern's Managerial
Accounting (AC 249) and Adolescent Literature (EN 219) are listed on the SREB's Electronic Campus.
AC 249 is a study of how accounting
data can be interpreted and used by management in planning and
controlling business activities of the firm. The uses of
accounting data by investors, quantitative methods, and
organizational behavior are also considered.
EN
219 emphasizes the reading and evaluation of
literature written for and by young adults (middle,
junior, and senior high school students). By analyzing
reading resources, the reading interests, and
developmental needs of adolescents and by classroom
observations of reading/literature instruction, the
student will develop the ability to help students to
select literature for independent reading and guide
them in analyzing group reading choices. Strategies to
stimulate reading for information and for pleasure
will include the reading of a wide variety of
adolescent literature reflecting cultural, ethnic,
social and sex role differences in a multi-cultural
society.

- Southern's On-line Courses
-
|
On-line classes are the
ultimate in convenience for students. This type of
instructional delivery does not require the students to be
physically present in the same location or at the same
time as the instructor. Students attend class and
complete course assignments via the Internet. Web
browsing ability and e-mail proficiency are minimal
requirements. Communication between student and the
instructor occurs through e-mail or chat room sessions.
Some courses may require visits to campus.
Southern's
on-line courses are powered by WebCT. WebCT is one of the world's
leading providers of e-learning systems.
If you already
registered for an on-line course, click on the
WebCT logo to the right to access Southern's
